Early Years Nursery Pilot Study
In early 2018 we worked on the development of a demonstration design for new nurseries for the Scottish Futures Trust. This work was undertaken in close dialogue with the education teams from East Ayrshire Council and was in partnership with Norr Architects.
Our garden reflects the increasing recognition that early years education benefits enormously from being outside: that all aspects of the early years Curriculum for Excellence can be delivered in well-designed outside space.
The garden is bio-philic in style with native plants and natural materials, water, sand and mud, changes in level and places to climb, roll, explore and imagine.
The garden is conceived as a strong framework that can be adapted and personalised on each site. A timber pergola offers immediate support for dens, tarpaulins, shelters, stores and swings etc, although plenty of tree planting will offer this structure in the future.
