erz were appointed in 2019 as landscape architects for the new Parkhead Health and Social Care Hub in Glasgow’s east end.

The project exemplifies a holistic approach to healthcare design, combining primary care, mental health and addiction services, homelessness support and community wellbeing in one location.

The building and site layout are focused around four key people-focused outdoor spaces that encourage varied use and activity. A new public plaza leads to the main building entrance and is a valuable addition to the public realm in this area of the city, offering a generous flexible space for community events and markets, raised beds with native tree and ornamental planting and south-facing seating edges encouraging people to pause and socialise.

The building’s intuitive layout is organised around three courtyards, each tailored to adjacent public or patient services, with these integrated green spaces softening the clinical environment, reducing stress and supporting mental and physical health. Beyond these four people-focused spaces, the wider site layout provides legible circulation and access routes within a strong planted framework.

As Scotland’s first net-zero healthcare facility, sustainability is embedded across environmental, social and economic aspects, including a green roof, permeable external surfaces and water management systems support biodiversity and climate resilience.
