Canaan Lane, Frogston, and Victoria Primary Schools.

Three diverse settings for primary and early years landscapes. The dense urban context of Canaan Lane School is informed by its historic setting. At Victoria Primary School, the design responds to the exposed seaside location. Frogston Primary School forms the heart of a new community on the edge of the city.

In all three cases, erz have created schoolscapes for imaginative, adventurous, and creative natural play and learning.

Frogston Primary School

At Frogston Primary School, we created a wild woodland belt on rolling hills, punctuated by small spaces for convivial ad educational activities.

Sensory play is integrated throughout. Here you can see a detail of our sensory path made from pebbles, timber, bricks, setts, and other materials, to generate tactile underfoot experiences that stimulate spacial and sensory awareness. In addition, the visual qualities of the path encourage imaginative games.

Canaan Lane Primary School

At Canaan Lane School, we preserved a historic row of cherry trees that now form a canopy under which children play in a range of settings, from sandpits, to growing beds, and loose-parts play.

Canaan Lane is a conservation area in the heart of historic Edinburgh. Our role included preservation and integration of historic elements, such as the old stone boundary wall from Deanbank House. A satisfying contrast is created with the contemporary qualities of the new school architecture.

Victoria Primary School

Victoria Primary School’s windy location in Leith determined an approach that prioritised shelter and comfort. The entrances to the school are soft, convivial and welcoming, protected by a range of hardy coastal planting.
