erz were commissioned to develop a proposal to bring alive the underused balcony space in the Lighthouse. The proposal is focused on redefining the balcony by establishing spatial and conceptual relationships to a wider setting. A series of panels are introduced to surrounding building elevations that are visible from the balcony so that it is read as part of a wider composition of elements. The curved wall that runs vertically through the building terminates at this level and the external copper cladding for the first time wraps over and faces into the core of the building. The unifying colour of all elements of the installation arises in response to the copper. Many of the ores and minerals that occur naturally with copper such as zinc ore, cadmium etc are yellow. Greenockite is a rare cadmium mineral that consists of Cadmium Sulfide in its crystalline form. It was first recognised in 1840 in Bishopton, Scotland, during the cutting of a tunnel for the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway. The panels are the colour of Greenockite.
