the climate box
erz, in collaboration with NVA, were short listed in the design competition to create a new public artwork in Stavanger, Norway. The object is, in simple terms, a glass cube. The cube is a self-contained living system that generates and stores its own energy for heat and light. The cube will have a significantly different presence in summer and winter. The short winter days will make the glowing box a beacon and inspiration through the long hours of darkness. The cube itself is developed as a sculptural object, but is deliberately restrained. It is the container and it is intended that it does not prevent appreciation of the content. The content of the cube is to be developed through a process of engagement that draws in specific communities within the local population. The cube has been developed to incorporate all of the technology, services, access points etc within its simple form. The cube acts as an exemplar of what alternative technologies can do in terms of microgeneration of energy, storage and use.
