Erz Limited were commissioned by Cordale Housing Association and West Dunbartonshire Council to contribute to the master-planning of proposed new housing adjacent to Main Street in Alexandria. The proposal reinforces the built edge to Main Street and development is configured to form a new public plaza and pedestrian link to the river Leven. The new public plaza focuses on the Smollet Fountain and creates a linear relationship between the fountain and a proposed single oak tree. The earlier emblam / icon of Alexandria was a long lived oak tree which was replaced (on the same site) by the Smollet fountain. The identity of the space therefore arises from the relationship of these 2 icons of the town. The space is designed to be flexible and to accommodate a range of activities including markets, community events etc. and simply to work as a space to pass through, sit and socialise.
