erz 2015

2015. For some this will be remembered as the year of ‘Back to the Future Day’, the year in which the new Star Wars film came out or the year in which England regained the Ashes. However, not to be outdone by these events, 2015 has been one of our busiest years ever here at erz: new staff, new projects, charity events and awards:

2015 was an exciting time for erz as a team. We’re pleased to have welcomed Chris Swan (Senior Landscape Architect) and David Hammett (Graduate Landscape Architect) to our Glasgow office. Also summer intern Euan Christie and current year out student Aidan Cifelli. Long standing employees Murray McKellar and Tom Witham were promoted to Associate. Both have worked at erz for over six years and this promotion recognises their hard work and contributions over this period.

With regard to this hard work, Tom is currently taking a well-earned sabbatical, travelling around Japan, Korea and Thailand. We look forward to Tom’s return in early 2016, seeing how new cultures and landscapes have informed his already extensive design vocabulary.

Whilst 2015 has brought about change at erz one element remains constant, we have been extremely busy! A total of 38 different projects have been worked on over the course of 2015, of which 9 projects have or are currently being built. Projects have ranged from health and wellbeing at the Urban Gym Wall in Possil, heritage and tourism at Callanais Standing Stones to the more recent renewable energy research for Glasgow’s innovative Land Art Generator Initiative.

This year erz also reached its 150th project. Our depth of project experience gives us the capability to creatively tackle and resolve all projects, whatever the type, scale or complexity. Do take a look at some of these projects on the new erz website. Designed for us by our neighbours Studio Suisse, it is full of new work and ideas.

Outside the busyness of project work, 2015 has provided several key team events at erz. These range from an office trip day around current and previous projects, a Pecha Kucha afternoon, Rainbow Week for East Park School, a website launch party and the standout team event of the year, The Five Ferries Challenge. A big thank you to all of you who supported us for the 5Ferries, we’ve so far raised over £5000 towards the Brick by Brick appeal for the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice Glasgow. If you’ve still not donated, or are looking for a thoughtful Christmas gift, then please donate at:

This Christmas erz are celebrating another successful year as a practice. 2015 has brought erz a total of five awards, three publications and three exhibitions. Most recently, erz were awarded a Highly Commended at the 2015 Landscape Institute Awards for Arcadia Nursery in Edinburgh. We are proud to be a very rare thing:  a successful and totally independent landscape architecture design studio.

We would like to thank all of our clients, project team members and friends for making 2015 such a good year.

From all of us at erz, we hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
