erz are delighted to have been awarded Highly Commended at the Landscape Institute 2018 awards for Royal Edinburgh Hospital, in the ‘Adding Value Through Landscape’ category.

erz were appointed as landscape architects on the project, leading the landscape masterplan and campus strategy followed by the design and delivery of the phase 1 project. We worked with NHS staff (leading workshops) to develop and refine the clinical brief and how those activities would be supported in the external spaces. Working with the architects NORR we were responsible for site masterplanning and the detailed design and implementation of all hard and soft works on site.

The project demonstrates that the provision of high quality, immediately accessible, outdoor space aids patient recovery, reduces tension (a precursor to violence and aggression) and significantly improves the health and wellbeing of patients and staff in mental health environments. The project has also substantially improved the quality of care and the daily lives of staff and patients at REH and this has been demonstrated in both the REH Phase 1 post evaluation and the written feedback from staff, patients and members of the NHS L clinical and capital planning teams.
